The American Women’s Club of Dublin holds an annual January Philanthropic High Tea event each year. This year it was held at The Westbury in Dublin. And, being a member of this fabulous organization, I was lucky enough to attend. It was my first official high tea in Europe – I even got to wear a lovely fascinator! #winning.
I am very happy (and proud) to say that the event raised over 1,700 Euro for our Dublin-based philanthropy, Serve The City. In order to raise funds, we sold raffle tickets for various donated prizes, vouchers, and held table raffles. I’d like to take a moment to send a special thank you to the companies that donated items including The Burren Perfumery, Niamh Daniels, Monart Spa, Stable, Ice House Hotel & Spa, and so many more. And y’all, guess what?! I won a prize: a Nicholas Mosse Teapot. Nicholas Mosse makes famous handcrafted Irish pottery. So, I was really friggin’ excited, and, I rarely win anything, so this was extra fabulous.(Pictured: Some of the raffle prizes along with the Nicholas Mosse teapot I won! Woohoo!)
Attendees were lent stunning fascinators from fabulous milliner Sarah McGahon of McGahon Millinery Ireland to wear during the event. I have a picture of the one I was lucky enough to wear below. It was very intricately detailed and made me feel classy, yet bold, and a tidbit mysterious (it is worn over the left eyebrow, essentially covering the eye altogether). According to Sarah (the milliner), “the point of a fascinator is to make you feel mysterious and sexy”. I can get on board with that. The table settings at The Westbury were elegant and classy. The flowers were spot-on, and the tea cups and plates reminded me of Tiffany & Company. It was really lovely. To boot, there was a table raffle for a gift certificate, a cookbook, and a teapot bag for each table at the event. I’ll tell you one thing, the ladies who gathered the raffle prizes for the high tea really know their audience.During a high tea, you get one tea of choice. Mine was called “Granny’s Garden”. It’s made from a blend of exotic fruits, fresh rhubarb, and bourbon vanilla. I mean, yes please. It was pink too; that was pleasant surprise as I had never had pink tea before. There were 30+ world-wide teas to choose from, which made it even harder to pick just one. I figure I will just have to go back for another High Tea at The Westbury ;). The array of finger sandwiches, selection of sweet pastries, and freshly baked bite-size buttermilk scones served with tea-infused jam and clotted cream (so.delicious.) were delectable. The sandwiches we were served included: honey baked Limerick ham, & sundried tomato relish on malt harvest, truffled chicken salad on a brioche roll, oak smoked salmon with lemon aioli on homemade soda bread, and free range egg & chive mayonnaise on milk pan. My mouth is watering just thinking about them. My favorite sweet pastry, if I had to choose, was a lovely bite-sized key-lime cheesecake (the one with the white sugar flower on top). But, the milk chocolate fudge log rolled in crystallized raspberry was lovely and rich – a close second.
As you can see in the photos below, we had quite an assortment of tasty delights. I would advise anyone attending a high tea to go hungry as you will leave beyond satisfied. This event reinforced that fabulous food, tea, and friends make for an idyllic setting. But, throw in the elegance of The Westbury, and you’re in for a real treat. For those of you who live in Ireland, or plan on visiting Dublin, I would suggest booking a High Tea at The Westbury and tucking in for the afternoon. It’s well worth it. Until next time, sláinte!
